There are many methods of roach control. Some methods are more effective than others. Home methods are best for minor infestations.
Home Brews
There are many home brewing methods. They all kill roaches, but are not effective at removing major infestations. For serious roach problems use a professional product and/or call a professional pest control company.
To kill roaches, you must attract them. They are instantly attracted to food and water. If you have roaches, they will, for sure, be in the kitchen. Home brews require food attractants and poisons. The poisons can often be household items.
Home products can be made into a dust or a paste. Pastes are generally easier to use and more effective. If, however, you know the roach walking path, dusting can also be beneficial.
Home Brew Recipes
Roach poisons are Boric Acid, Borax, and Baking Soda. Boric Acid is the best product to use and can be found at nearly any hardware store. It comes in powder form to be used as a dust. You can, however brew it into a paste.
To make the product sticky, like a paste, use flour. It’s like making some unleavened bread. To attract the roaches, sugar is very popular. Peanut butter and bread are also good attractants.
Roach Home Brew Example Recipe Tip
Keep a ration of 1/3 to 1/2 of the recipe poison and the rest attractants. If you keep the ratios right, you can make it with whatever you have in your home.
Example Recipe
- One Cup Flour
- One Cup Borax
- One Cup Sugar
Slowly add cup water checking for paste thickness. Mix in disposable plastic bowl with spatula. Check consistency for thickness. Add flour and water, as necessary. Apply product under counters, cabinets, and wherever the roaches might be. The paste should last approximately one week.
Dusting Recipe Example
Simply mix powdered sugar with baking soda. Lightly dust surfaces to where you can barely see the dust. If you dust too heavily, the roaches will avoid it altogether.
- One cup baking soda
- Once cup powdered sugar
- Mix well
Home Traps
Traps are useful to find out where the roaches are. Take a mason jar and fill 1/3 with water and a food attractant. Make sure the jar can easily be entered by the roaches. For example, you can put it next to a wall or sticky tape on the outside of it. Roaches will go in to feed and won’t be able to climb out. If you put several traps throughout hour home, you will be able to "see where the action is". Most likely, they will be in the kitchen or near a water source.
